You can opt out of the conversation, but then you won't be able to tell me why I'm wrong.

[ A deep breath, steeling himself. Then: ]

I want to donate my heart. [ Before Takeshi can sneak in an immediate protest, Stephen follows it up with the practicality. ] It makes sense for those of us with the experience to weather it to offer ourselves up before things go the way they did last time.

Not specifically. But I've died a few times, I've got a knack for it.

[ There's no point in lying to him. ]

I've never survived something like this before. If I've killed people, or made plays that necessitate death, I've always died in the process. As a means to an end.

I'm starting to think that might be what's kept me going.

I can't turn it off this time. Sooner or later, something's going to give.

I can't lose control again, Takeshi. I don't know what I'll become.

[ We all have death as a tidy chapter closer he almost argues, until Takeshi's words pierce silence through his thoughts like the aftermath of an explosion.

What feels like an age but is only a second or two later, quieted, confused: ]

What?

Why?

[ He knows. Doesn't know. Needs to. ]

[ He doesn't like it. He doesn't. It was bad enough to inflict his death on them all, it isn't fair that Takeshi should have his blood on his hands just so Stephen can chase peace under the fragile guise of duty. But to deny him would hurt him too. And the fact that Stephen can't take the third option, just stay alive, is proof enough that afflictions of the mind are worse than marks on the body.

Deep breath in. Out. Choking down his protests before they can leave his thoughts. If he's doing this to him either way, he doesn't get to say no here. ]

Alright.

[ Sorry feels hollow when he isn't sorry enough not to cause the harm. When what he really feels is - ]

Thank you.
