An accident, and they've hidden the body well enough to warrant a search team. That means they're scared, probably hiding themselves, and if anyone else stumbles over them before the Duchess brings your friend back, he isn't going to be the only body.

It's only my guess, but if their zadza were sated through the act, it may have prompted the attempt to deny the event.
